In solidarity and collaboration, Wapato Island Farm is co-hosting Unthanksgiving alongside Portland, Parks and Recreation, Prismid Sanctuary, 7 Waters Canoe Family, and NAYA.
NAYA Family Center's community garden, Wapas Na Née Shaku, began hosting this event in 2021 to change the narrative around this colonial holiday, marking it as a day of Mourning Genocide and Celebrating Survival for Native Tribal peoples. This is a day to eschew a colonial holiday marked as thanks giving, but holds a much darker history for Indigenous people. Instead an alternative day is offered in our spaces, one of solidarity with Indigenous peoples, where in this modern context we can hold respect and uplift Indigenous Food Sovereignty.
